Monday Morning Coffee

March 6th, 2017

Just when you thought the Laker front office was stabilizing, Jim Buss comes back to screw the franchise.  That’s right folks, Jim Buss wasn’t going to go quietly into the night after his sister fired him.  It’s like watching an episode of Game of Thrones, except Jim’s removal was more like “The Purple and Gold Wedding”.  Jim and his brother Johnny, are trying to take control, but I don’t see it happening.  The fact that Jim and Johnny’s first attempt to oust Jeanie was shot down rather quickly, suggests that he and Johnny are being nothing but foolish and vengeful.  I also love how Jim’s attorney tried to do major damage control after the story leaked, claiming that the two brothers support her.  It was also interesting to see  NBA spokesman Mike Bass quickly issue a statement in support of Jeanie and her importance as an owner in the NBA.  There’s simply no way that the NBA is going to allow the Billy Madison of the Buss family to be the controlling owner of the Lakers.  I guess we’ll know for sure on May 15th when a judge reviews the family trust.  Who says the Lakers aren’t playing in the post season?

Meanwhile, the Clippers have been having their own problems on the court of late.  They’ve lost 4 of their last 5 games, and have been getting destroyed by their top competition in the Western Conference.  Even more alarming was the fact that they got blown out by the Houston Rockets by 30 points at home.  Weren’t the Clippers supposed to have this great bench this year? Don’t people say the Clippers are going to have a great bench every year? Well once again, they don’t.  Austin Rivers is not a real point guard.  Ray Felton is past his prime, and Jamal Crawford has been in a horrible slump.  Everyone is healthy, and the Clippers still can’t hang with the best teams in the West.  They also can’t defend against good 3 point shooting teams.  We all know how this movie ends, but Doc Rivers is of course pretending like he hasn’t seen it five times.

Next week is going to be an amazing Pac 12 Tournament in Las Vegas.  UCLA is probably going to have to go through USC, Arizona, and then Oregon to win the tournament.  The good news though is that if they beat those three teams, they will be a #1 seed in the Western Region.  However, the Bruins better hope that freshman forward TJ Leaf will be healthy enough to play next week.  There’s no way UCLA can contend with the size of Arizona without having their own skill in the paint in Leaf.  This is going to be fun, and the NCAA Tournament is going to be even better the following week.

I can’t believe how early spring training started this year.  And we wonder why pitchers keep having Tommy John’s surgery? That leads us to the Dodgers.  I can’t believe some people are buying into the nonsense that the Dodgers are world series contenders.  I must have missed the part where the Dodgers acquired another reliable starting pitcher over the winter.  I also must have missed the part where they added some more trustworthy arms in their middle relief.  On top of that, they can’t decide on 3 regular outfielders, which screws up the quality of their play by shuffling them in and out of the lineup.  Until that changes, this team might win the division, but is nothing more than a pussy cat in the postseason.

Then there’s the Angels, who are playing in the AL West, which should be known as “the division of death.”  The Halos are going to have to figure out a way to deal with a young and talented Houston team, an always solid Texas team, and a Mariners team that is bound to make the playoffs one of these years we keep making fun of them.  I can’t imagine that the Angels aren’t going to score runs, but its a matter of whether or not their starting pitchers can stay off of the operating table.  The Halos aren’t even sure Garrett Richards is going to be healthy and return to the ace he once was.  They’ll also need to get lucky with a few more arms on their staff.  Mike Trout is amazing, but he can’t do it all.  The Angels are going to need to get lucky to get into the post season.

I still think the LA Kings are in serious danger of missing the playoffs.  Jerome Iginla is 39 years old.  Acquiring him last week was a great move….5 years ago.  Even though it’s low risk, LA just doesn’t have the goal scorers this year to get it done.  It’s like watching a team throw for 400 yards every game in the NFL, but never score inside the red zone.  The Kings dominate the shots, the possession stats, and even special teams, but they get outscored 5-on-5.  Then there’s the Ducks who acquired the player the Kings needed at the deadline: Patrick Eaves.  Anaheim has their own goal scoring issues, but is still in good position to make the playoffs, and then see what happens from there.

Last night’s episode of The Walking Dead was the equivalent of watching an apocalyptic  honey moon.  Spoiler alert for those of you who have yet to see it so read no further if that is the case.  You didn’t really think that Rick died in that episode did you? I would hope if it ever came to that, it wouldn’t be at the hands of a pack of walkers like that.  I think Rick has laughed and smiled more in the last three episodes than he has during the last seven seasons.  Then there’s Rosita.  who I really liked for a while, but now she’s just being stupid.  It’s like she wants to be Carol, but she’s just being driven by emotion and anger, and that usually gets somebody killed.  It nearly got Carl killed, but this time, I don’t think Rosita is going to get some spaghetti if things don’t work out.  I’m surprised that Sasha is being just as dumb about the whole plan to take down Negan as she is.  They both failed to realize that her foolishness is actually what got Eugene captured.

Finally, it’s going to be a three hour episode of The Bachelor tonight.  I’d like to thank Corrine for making this season worth watching, prior to her departure last week.  I think it’s safe to say Nick is an idiot for getting rid of her.  Hope he has fun renewing his passport and living in Canada, or squashing all those roaches in Houston, or rolling in the mud in Arkansas, as opposed to living in Miami.  It was very fitting though that Corrine took a nap right after her big statement in the limo when she was leaving.  Apparently dismissing her was Nick’s way of thanking her for buying him a pair of $800 sweatpants.  You’ve gotta feel bad for Raven’s ex-boyfriend.  She’s putting the dude on blast for cheating on him, and then never giving her an orgasm.  That guy might never get another woman.  There’s nothing worse than seeing a guy cry in a turtleneck.  I feel like after that episode we need to call him “TurtleNick”.  The only smart thing Nick has said this entire season is that ironing your clothes is way more effective than steaming them.

Lakers Falter Late vs Pelicans

March 6th, 2017

The Lakers had their hands full on Sunday night against the Pelicans new dynamic duo.  New Orleans held on late for a 105-97 win at Staples Center, behind the strength of DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis.

Cousins piled up 26 points and 15 rebounds, and Anthony Davis added 31 points and 9 rebounds, which ultimately sent the Lakers to their 7th straight loss.

Nick Young led LA with 19 points, while D’Angelo Russell and Brandon Ingram each scored 16.  The Lakers were down by 14 points with just over 5:30 left in the game, and then they went on a 14-0 run.  Julius Randle made two free throws with 1:55 left, but the Lakeres wouldn’t come any closer than that.

Anthony Davis made a jumper on the next possession.  After D’Angelo Russell missed a 3-point jumper, the Pelicans would extend the lead further.  Jrue Holiday made a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach, which came after New Orleans picked up an offensive rebound from Holiday’s jumper just moments earlier.

“I missed a lot of wide-open ones,” said Russell.  “I could see if I was forcing it or whatever, but I feel like I missed a lot of wide-open ones that they capitalized on.”

“The execution wasn’t great in the last couple minutes,” Laker Coach Luke Walton said. “It was good experience for them, but the way we played in the third and the start of the fourth is where we’re going to be focusing our efforts going into practice tomorrow.”

The good news for the Lakers is that they are now two games behind the Phoenix Suns, comfortably giving them the 2nd worst record in the league.  That’s good news because the Lakers 1st round draft pick this year is top 3 protected.

The Lakers hit the road for a couple of games now.  They’ll face Dallas on Tuesday, followed by the Suns on Thursday, in another game that has big implications for draft positioning.

Ducks Can’t Find The Power Vs Canucks

March 6th, 2017

The Ducks haven’t been able to string together consecutive wins since mid-January, and they failed again on Sunday night against Vancouver.  The Canucks surprised Anaheim with a 2-1 win at the Honda Center.

The surprise was Canucks goalie Richard Bachman, who made his first appearance of the season for the Canucks.  The 29-year-old made 43 saves, and got his first win since October 30, 2015.  Vancouver is now 6 points out of the playoffs after beating the Kings and Ducks on back-to-back nights.

The Ducks fell behind 2-0, after Bo Horvat and Markus Granlund scored in the 1st two periods for Vancouver.

Anaheim got on the board in the 3rd period when Patrick Eaves knocked in a shot off a pass from Ryan Getzlaf.  However, they would get no closer despite having their chances.

The Ducks had two 3rd period power plays, but didn’t do much with them.  In fact, Anaheim had just three power plays in their last two games, and has scored just once in their last 35 opportunities.

“They did a good job of getting in lanes,” Eaves said. “We threw a lot at the net — we threw things from the sides, from all over the place … unfortunately it didn’t bounce out to one of us.”

Anaheim outshot Vancouver 19-4 in the 3rd period, but they couldn’t solve Bachman, and had trouble getting quality shots on net.  The Canucks blocked 17 shots.

The Ducks are still tied for 3rd place in the Pacific Division.  They’ll take on Nashville on Tuesday night at the Honda Center before hitting the road for a couple of games.

Crawford Leads Clippers Past Bulls

March 5th, 2017

Jamal Crawford helped the Clippers break their losing skid on Saturday night.  Crawford had 25 points off the bench as the Clippers beat the Bulls 101-91.

The Clippers also got 17 points from Chris Paul, and 16 from Blake Griffin.  The win snapped LA’s 2 game losing skid.

Crawford scored 10 points during a 14-7 Clippers run in the 4th quarter.  He scored in single digits in 5 of his last 6 games, but finally broke out.

”He’s going to always break out,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. ”I always tell him to give yourself a shooter’s chance. If you don’t shoot it, you have no chance of breaking out of it.”

Jimmy Butler led the way for the Bulls with 16 points in a losing effort. Chicago had won 5 of the last 6, including wins against Golden State and Cleveland.

The Clippers are back home Monday night to take on the Celtics.

Kings Rally Falls Short Against Canucks

March 5th, 2017

Another game the Kings needed got away from them on Saturday night at Staples.  The Kings fell behind 4-0, but their rally fell short as they lost 4-3 to Vancouver.

Sven Baertschi scored twice, Ryan Miller made 41 saves and the Vancouver Canucks ended a four-game losing streak.

Trevor Lewis and Anze Kopitar each scored a power-play goal, Alec Martinez scored a short-handed goal and Ben Bishop made 17 saves in his home debut for Los Angeles, which missed out on a chance to move three points ahead of St. Louis for the second wild card in the Western Conference.

In typical Kings fashion, LA outshot their opponent 44-21, and dominated the possession numbers as well.  The Kings even won the special teams battle, scoring two power play goals, and not giving up any to Vancouver.

However, LA continued to have problems 5-on-5.  “On the score sheet, we may be close, but really the first two periods, it was nowhere near close enough to our game, and nowhere near close to being good enough,” Kopitar said.

The Kings were victimized by a few unfortunate deflections against them, but they have little room for error left.   LA continues game 3 of its 7 game home stand on Thursday against Nashville.

Bruins Take Care of Cougars

March 5th, 2017

UCLA finished up their Pac 12 play on Saturday night with a 77-68 win over Washington State at Pauley Pavilion.  The Bruins sleep walked their way through most of this one but got the job done.

Aaron Holiday led the way for the Bruins with 16 points, and Isaac Hamilton scored 14, as the Bruins made it 9 wins in a row.  UCLA went on a 14-0 run over the final 10 minutes to secure the win.

The Bruins played without Freshman TJ Leaf, who sat out with an injured ankle.   However, they got another solid performance from their other star freshman.  Lonzo Ball scored 12 points to go along with 14 assists.  That broke Gary Payton’s freshman assist record in the Pac 12.

Charles Callison led the Cougars with 25 points.  Josh Hawkinson had 16 to go along with 14 rebounds.  That gave him the school’s all-time rebounding record.

The Cougars were up 47-44, and 51-50  before the Bruins went on their 14-0 run.

It was an emotional night for the Seniors, who were playing their final game at Pauley Pavilion.  Both Coach Steve and his son Bryce Alford were particularly emotional.

The Bruins also honored the 1966-1967 team that went 30-0 at halftime.  Kareem Abdul-Jabaar was in attendance.

UCLA enters the Pac 12 Tournament as the #3 seed.  They’ll play in the quarterfinals on Thursday in Vegas.  There’s a good chance the Bruins will have to go through USC, Oregon, and Arizona to win the conference tournament, but doing so would likely make them a #1 seed in the West for the NCAA tournament.

Ducks Look Good After Bye

March 3rd, 2017

For most NHL teams, their first game after the bye week hasn’t gone well.  That wasn’t the case for the Ducks, who beat the Maple Leafs 5-2 on Friday at the Honda Center.

Richard Rakell scored twice and Jonathan Bernier made 37 saves, as the Ducks maintained a two point lead over Calgary for 3rd place in the Pacific Division.

The Ducks  also got goals from Sami Vatanen and Jakob Silfverberg.  Patrick Eaves added an empty-netter for his first goal as a Duck to secure the win.

Anaheim fell behind 2-1 in the 2nd period after a power play goal from Toronto’s Nazem Kadri.  However, the Ducks got goals 16 seconds apart from Silfverberg and Rakell.

Rakell now has 4 goals in his last 3 games and 26 on the season.

Bernier got the win against his former team.  Meanwhile, Frederik Andersen did not get the chance to play against the Ducks, his former team, as he sat out the 2nd night of a back-to-back.

Ducks G John Gibson missed his third consecutive game with a lower-body injury.  Anaheim will return to action on Sunday night vs Vancouver.

Clippers Struggles Continue In Milwaukee

March 3rd, 2017

The Clippers took their struggles to the road Friday, and this time it was Milwaukee handing them another loss.  The Bucks got off to a fast start and held on for a 112-101 win.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 24 points and eight assists.  Greg Monroe scored 23 points too, but the Bucks nearly gave up a 23 point lead.

The Clipps got within 77-74, after Chris Paul made four 3-pointers.  However, the Bucks went on a 15-2 run and regained a 16 point lead with 9 minutes left.

Paul and Blake Griffin scored 21 points each for the Clippers.  DeAndre Jordan had 14, but LA was doomed by its 23 turnovers.  That led to 41 points by the Bucks.

The Clippers have not only slipped to 5th in the West, but they are getting dangerously close to falling as far as 7th in the West.  They’ll try to find the win column tonight in Chicago.

Celtics Beat Lakers Amid Chaos

March 3rd, 2017

The Celtics came in to Staples Center on Friday and beat the Lakers 115-95.  It was the Lakers 6th straight loss, but the real chaos that ensued was with LA’s ownership.

On Friday afternoon it was revealed that Jim Buss and his brother Johnny, attempted to oust their sister, Jeanie Buss as controlling owner of the Lakers.  It was just a couple of weeks ago that Jeanie fired Jim from the head of basketball operations.  However, Jeanie thwarted her brothers attempts to take over the franchise.

The Buss boys had attempted to call an emergency meeting next week to have a new board of directors put into place, and ultimately, remove Jeanie as the controlling owner.  However, according to the Buss family trust, it is set up to have Jeanie maintain controlling ownership.  Jim and Johnny have no legal leg to stand on according to Jeanie’s attorney.

On the court, the Lakers weren’t very competitive against their hated rivals.  Isaiah Thomas scored 18 point and Jae Crowder added 14 for Boston.   The Celtics scored 70 points in the 1st half, and opened up a 25 point lead at halftime.

Jordan Clarkson led the Lakers with 20 points off the bench, and D’Angelo Russell  scored 17, but the Lakers fell to last place in the Western Conference.

“As we were playing hard and competing, they kept inching that lead out more and more, and then it felt like we got in desperation mode, which is the thing we need to learn from tonight,” Lakers Coach Luke Walton said.

The Lakers will try to snap their skid on Sunday against the New Orleans Pelicans at Staples Center.  The drama with ownership may not be over though.

Kings Beat Leafs After Big Day

March 2nd, 2017

It was an emotional day for the Kings, who managed to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday night at Staples Center.  It was bittersweet for Kings fans after learning that Hall of Fame announcer, Bob Miller will be retiring at the end of the season.

The Kings trailed 2-0 after Toronto got goals from Tyler Bozak and Nikita Zaitsev in the 1st two periods.  However, LA battled back in the 3rd, sparked by Anze Kopitar’s power play goal 27 seconds in the period.

The goal was the first for the Kings captain in the last 13 games, and bounced off the head of Zaitsev in to the Toronto net.

Just 90 seconds later, Tanner Pearson tied the game at 2-2 after sliding the puck past Frederik Anderson.  It was his 22nd goal of the season.

After an exciting overtime session in which both teams had their chances, the game would go to a shootout.  That’s when Kopitar would score the only goal for either side, to help secure a big Kings win.

Jonathan Quick made 29 saves, and stopped all 3 Maple Leafs he faced in the shootout.  Quick’s final save was very acrobatic, where he even reached behind his back to stop the fin shot.

With the win, the Kings inch past St. Louis and back into the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Jerome Iginla made his debut as a King.  He knows he has work to do though,  “Personally, I can get better,” he said. “It was a fun game to be a part of. You could tell how important the points were, for them and for us. And to be able to come back and get that in the overtime, back and forth is pretty exciting.

As for Bob Miller, just hours earlier, he announced that this would be his final season with the Kings, after  44 years and 3,351 broadcasts.  Miller is 78, and coming off of a minor stroke he suffered in January.  It’s the 2nd straight season that Miller has had health problems.  In February of last year, he had a four-way heart-bypass operation.  Doctors had essentially made the decision for him, telling him to slow down.

“I said, ‘Well, in this sport, in my mind, there’s no taking it easy. When they drop the puck, you’re going. You’re on,’” he said. “And that’s what the fans expect from you and that’s the way you want to do the game.

Ralph Strangis has been filling in for Miller for the last month with play-by-play duties.  However, Miller said that he will call two finals games: April 8th vs Chicago, and April 9th at Anaheim.  That gives him and the Kings fans a final chance to say goodbye.

Miller’s retirement is the end of an era of great broadcasting in Los Angeles.  For nearly half a century, LA got to listen to three Hall of Fame announcers: Vin Scully, Chick Hearn, and Miller.  Kings President of Business Operations Luc Robitaille summed it up best: “No one will ever replace Bob, just like you can’t replace the great people that worked for the Dodgers and the Lakers. He’s at that same level.”
